The Engine Masters Challenge is the purest interpretation of motorsport, a sport literally made out of motors. This is the event where top builders nationwide compete for best overall power on the engine dynos at the University of Northwestern Ohio’s Applied Technologies College.

Ever since primitive man learned how to smelt iron roughly 3,000 years ago, it has been synonymous with durability and strength. Okay, maybe there are not many of us that actually care who first made iron. But as auto enthusiasts, we do care about engine blocks. They are made of iron, so that makes it important.

One of the many great things about the small-block Chevy is its versatility. Think about it for a minute: the same basic powerplant has been used to power everything from a heavy-hauling farm truck that rarely sees the high side of 30 mph to a production-bodied, land-speed record holder exceeding 300 miles per hour. The needs of mostSuper Chevy readers fall somewhere between these two extremes, but that still leaves a lot of room for individuality when it comes time to choose motivation for your favorite muscle car, street rod, or even daily driver. At Super Chevy we recognize the fact that not every enthusiast wants or needs an 8-second street machine, but few stick to stone stock.

From a simple math standpoint, making more horsepower requires nothing more than shifting torque production higher in the rev range. It is also possible to simply produce more torque in the same rpm, but with any given displacement, additional torque becomes more and more difficult.

A few years ago, our sister magazine Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords covered the buildup and dyno test of a 347ci small-block with off-the-shelf parts, street-oriented cam timing, and a carburetor, and the crowning touch was a CSX Racing twin-turbo setup. The results were less than expected due to a few factors, so in this story, we will fix those ailments and develop more power in a more controllable package. While this engine is on the wild side for most Mustang Monthly readers, some of our readers love hearing about turbo engines. This small-block is right at home between the shock towers of a street or strip Mustang. Speedmaster teams up with Nelson Competition Products to deliver a powerful 427 small block Chevy motor. "After careful consideration, I think that a Speedmaster 427 SBC engine would be perfect for this project. I know I am able to take Speedmaster's products and produce a powerhouse." said Tad Nelson "I expect that the motor will make 600 to 650HP and run on pump gas. We will also be dialing the cam back to make a well rounded power producing street machine." NCP has been wanting to build a 427 for a while. Their last motor project was a 383 small block Chevy that produced 642HP. "Our last motor project like this was a success. We were able to take a gm block and 23 degree heads and produce 642HP while running dual 1050 Dominators. "Just imagine what we will be able to do with this one." said Nelson
